THE BELFRY (1650)

The baroque belfry is a part of the late Gothic church of saint John the Baptist and it fortunately did not get destroyed during the war and it is in its original state.

It is situated on the south-west side of the church. The build is rectangular, the base is made of stone and the corpus of bricks. The roof is made out of wood and covered with tiles.

The entrance is on the east side and above it there is a triangular tympanum. There are many figurines of saints on the sides and a couple of more modern plaques. The two bells from the XVI and XVII centuries and the original plate with the 1889 date are well preserved to this day.

The church and belfry are proof of Wizna’s rich history and its importance in the Middle Ages and renaissance.
